FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
What is simultaneous interpreting?
Simultaneous interpreting, also known as ‘simultaneous translation’, is a form of uninterrupted oral translation performed while a speaker is talking. In this process, the interpreter listens to the speech in the original language and immediately translates it into the other language, following the original cadence and pacing. For this type of interpreting, equipment is generally used, allowing the interpreter to translate live without interfering with the speaker's flow. Radio systems in discreet booths transmit translated speeches to attendees through light and comfortable earphones attached to personal receivers.
What kind of equipment is available for in-person simultaneous interpretation?
Is simultaneous interpreting possible online? What is RSI?
Yes, remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) is possible. This service was available before the COVID-19 pandemic, and gained significant popularity since then. Platforms such as Zoom provide 'virtual booths' where simultaneous interpreters work as if they were at the event in person. Attendees choose their language channels onscreen and listen to live translations. This option is practical for hybrid or fully online events, allowing with some participants actually attending the event while its interpreters operate remotely.
What is consecutive interpreting?
Requiring no equipment, consecutive interpreting is recommended for smaller, shorter events or brief ceremonies. The speaker utters a few sentences and pauses for the interpreter alongside to translate into another language. This method almost doubles the duration of the event, as speakers must wait for their interpreters to translate before continuing. This may make events less dynamic, especially for largely bilingual audiences.
How many interpreters are needed?
Top quality simultaneous interpreting services require teams of at least two interpreters for each language pair. Ensuring alertness and accuracy, they work in tandem, switching every thirty minutes to stay fully focused for the duration of each session. The duration of interpreter workdays should be limited to six hours, with no more than two hours of overtime. Due to the complexity of this mental process and the close concentration that it demands, no interpreter should work alone for more than an hour, with 45 minutes being the recommended limit.
How to ensure that interpreters are qualified?
Hiring a qualified interpreter requires thorough vetting and due diligence.
Key steps include:
  • • Requesting an interpreter's CV to review their academic credentials and professional experience
  • • Checking references from previous clients to verify the interpreter's performance and reliabilit
  • • Confirming the interpreter's affiliation with respected industry associations such as APIC (Professional Association of Conference Interpreters) or AIIC (Association Internationale des Interprètes de Conférence), as their members are often the best qualified and must comply with strict codes of ethics.
Is it safe to hire simultaneous interpreters for confidential events?
Yes. Professional interpreters, including those affiliated with reputable industry associations like APIC (Professional Association of Conference Interpreters) and AIIC (Association Internationale des Interprètes de Conférence), are bound by strict codes of ethics that ensure confidentiality. For greater security, Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) may be signed with individual interpreters.
What information should I provide when requesting an interpreting quote for my event?
To obtain an accurate quote, it's important to provide the following details:
  • - Title and subject matter of the event
  • - Desired languages for interpretation
  • - Location (city and venue) or online platform
  • - Dates and times, including scheduled breaks or pauses
  • - Number of attendees requiring interpretation services, especially if equipment is needed
How do interpreters prepare for the event?
Professional interpreters are adept at translating across a wide range of topics and often specialize in particular fields. To ensure accurate and effective interpretation, clients must provide the interpreters with the event agenda well in advance, together with other relevant materials. This allows the interpreters to thoroughly review the content, research relevant terminology, and become familiar with technical vocabulary used during the event.
When do the interpreters arrive at the event?
To ensure adequate preparation, the interpreters arrive at the venue about thirty minutes before the start of the event. This gives them time to:
Organise the interpreting booth or workstation
  • Test the equipment and ensure it is functioning properly
  • Confirm that all systems are ready for the start of the event
  • Confirm that all systems are ready for the start of the event
In the case of remote interpreting, please establish the connection 30 minutes beforehand so that tests can be carried out.
